Who is Maria Montessori? What is the Montessori method?A stimulating environment is created which allows children to absorb new experiences and knowledge through exploration in each child’s individual interests and abilities. This type of environment allows children to learn unconsciously and without effort.Language Arts study:Letter recognition and phonics is reinforced throughout the day in each classroom. Specific exercises work on vocabulary development, phonics skills, reading readiness and development of writing skills. Many different methods are involved including sound box, sandpaper letters, salt & rice writing. Children who are beginning to read are stimulated with works which involve word matching to the appropriate pictures and phonetic reading books. Each letter is introduced in sign language as well. Math & Sensorial study:Through exploration using all 5 senses, the children learn sequencing, quantity of numbers and concepts of operation (addition & subtraction). Lessons introduce skills such as sequencing, number recognition through 100, fractions, counting with objects and recognizing our colors and numbers in Spanish. Science & Geography study:Children explore the Earth as their environment, learning about animals, plants, weather, seasons, other planets, rocks and magnets. We learn geography through mapping skills and song. Art & Music study:The children gain appreciation of famous composers and artists through hands-on experience with numerous instruments and techniques of art that are introduced each day in the classroom.
